Christian Gosvig Olesen: "At the Origins of the Montage Film - Hyperkino I: Engineer Prite's Project (Lev Kuleshov, Russia, 1918)"

"The final Hyperkino note is in many ways one of the most interesting the DVD has to offer. This is where different film versions are discussed in relation to each other with an explanation of the challenges which occured in the reconstruction of the film's montage. There are some indications that the film's montage is not completely reestablished even in the version presented in the Hyperkino format with the reconstructed intertitles, though it is likely to be the closest it will get to the film's original montage. It is clear for example that it differs significantly from a previous version, cut by cinematographer Vera Khanzhonkova in 1965, which was not made on the basis of Kuleshov's intertitles, that were not available in those years (they were first published in 1978). Furthermore there are marks in the film's negative elements, that raise questions about how accurately intertitles have been inserted in the version based on the 1978-intertitles or whether the film in this form contains lacunae which have not been perceived of fully in the restoration process. ....Nevertheless, one feels to be in exceptionally good hands when guided through the film via the Hyperkino-notes and to be better prepared to understand such a crucial film in the beginning of an era in Russian/Soviet film."
